Baton Rouge was considered the largest city of Louisiana until Hurricane Katrina> Now it continues to enjoy being the capital of Louisiana and holds the position of its second largest city. Post the Hurricane Katrina, Baton Rouge native residents are seen to be moving to the outlying parishes of Livingston Parish and Ascension Parish and it has been noted that this area is designated with one of the fasted declining population rates according to the US Census report of 2007 2008. However, the Metropolitan Baton Rouge�s population has been on an increase and is considered to be one of the fastest growing areas with an estimated population of 770,000 in 2008. Baton Rouge�s motto goes by �Authentic Louisiana at every turn� primarily because of it varied and exciting mix of cultures.
Baton Rouge is also home to the Louisiana State University. The university was founded in 1853 and is the largest institute of higher education in the state. College sports form a very vital part of the Baton Rouge life. The most popular college teams of this area are the Southern University Jaguars and the LSU Tigers. Football is the biggest entertainment provider but other popular sports are basketball, baseball as well as gymnastics. Amongst the other college sports that make news in the area is the extremely successful rugby team that goes by the name of Baton Rouge Redfishes. Since its inception in 1977, this team has gone onto win several championships and regularly competes as a Division II team in the Deep South Rugby Union.
Alongside, the LSU is also a part of the Southeastern Conference and the NCAA and its teams for twenty varsity sports constitutes of nine teams for men and eleven for women. With 6 NCAA College World Series that LSU has won, their most recent win was in 2009 where they won against Texas. Their mascot is the Bengal Tiger called Mike the Tiger.
The Advocate is the daily newspaper of this area and has been in publication since 1925. Along with other publication that cover business news, healthcare and other aspects that affect everyday life. Baton Rouge has a well connected television and radio network as well that cover all major sporting events and news and other events that take place though out the year such as the Mardi Gras, Louisiana Earth Day, Red Stick International Animation Festival and many more.
